Donatello was born in Florence, Italy in 1386.  His birth name was Danato di Niccolò Bardi, but he was later called Donatello. There is not a lot known about Donatello's life, but historians have found information by short stories that were written by Giorgio Vasari. Donatello first picked up sculpting and other art techniques at the Stonemasons' Guild. After attending the Stonemasons Guild, he became an apprentice to Lorenzo Ghiberti. When Donatello was seventeen years old, he practiced something called Bronze Relief, which meant that he sculpted on a flat surface. Donatello was trying to master bronze relief in the Florentine Baptistery.  At the Florentine Baptistery is where Donatello began to create some of his greatest works.   One of his great contributions was the introduction of perspective.  He believed that a sculpture or statue could be seen in a completely different way just by changing the perspective the viewer looks at it.  Donatello has created many different forms of art, but he is most famous for is sculpting skills.  Donatello was the most highly-ranked sculptor before Michelangelo, and he influenced art styles throughout the fifteenth century in Italy.
